After many trail scouts, time trials, anal maps, and a few last minute changes, it was D-day for Flying Booger, Casual Friday and the Pack.  The weather started out pleasant for a 14-mile bike hash; to turn chilly and cloudy by beer check.  It was difficult to hide the all-knowing grin from Booger's and my face as we were going to attempt to hook the pack into some checkbacks, adding a possible 4.5 miles to true trail.  We threw one decision point in the beginning of trail to make the pack think we were using them to signal change in direction; little did they know they were in for quite a ride.  Booger was anxious knowing that laying live trail has its risks; being snared and screwing up trail as the biggest, followed by shame from the co-hare and self-embarrassment.  After feeding Sunday morning's pack red wine and wafers, Booger psyched the pack out by blatantly handing me a walkie-talkie to clip onto my flour sack.  As the pack was then agitated, we loaded up our maps, flour, and chalk while crossing our fingers that yesterday's hash trail crossings wouldn't screw us up too bad.

Booger started laying trail as I shifted my flour sack to my back and veered in the...

Scouting Trail:

Holy crap Batman!  It was a chilly one out there today!  After a near miss with a police car and my heart stuck in my throat for 10 minutes, I picked up my co-hare and we were off to face a cold wind and a dissappearing sun.  We racked up 18 miles today (not to be confused with length of trail) and I grew tired of seeing pantylines.  I gave Booger a 20-spot to buy some new tights, perhaps something with a little thicker material this time around.

We had a snaffu or two on trail, the biggest challenge was Booger's flat tire.  Thanks to Pick N Flick's insistence, he had an extra tube and basic tools beneath his bicycle seat.  We had a pop-lesson on "Changing tires roadside 101."  Booger did great, but the temperature must have dipped 10 degrees while we were toiling over the tire.  We froze our arses the rest of the way to the finish.  We mapped out 100% of the trail, and we're psyched about it!  All that is left to do is to figure out where we need to haul-ass and if we need to wear urban camouflage to hide from the pack or...

Scouting Trail:

After having signals crossed resulting in my co-hare waiting an hour for me at the start location, we saddled-up for our scouting outing for the Pedalfiles.  Taking many turns and counting our miles, we came to a couple conclusions.

We need to incorporate check backs to slow down the ultra cyclists and avoid busy intersections to insure the safety of the pack.  The check backs are fairly straight forward but ensuring the safety of the pack can be a challenge.  As responsible hares, we want to maintain standard cycling laws such as riding on the right side of the street, staying off sidewalks and out of crosswalks.  So how do two seasoned hares get a drunken pack on wheels to cross over three lanes of traffic to make a left turn while following powder?

You'll have to get on your bike and ride the Pedalfiles trail hared by Flying Booger and myself, Sunday, January 21 to find out!

 On-On!
